Art déco style in interiors. The most interesting inspirations

Art déco style in interiors. The most interesting inspirations

Art déco in architecture is somewhat associated with the Great Gatsby. It is a style filled with ornaments and elements from historically classical styles such as Rococo.  Additionally, art déco is a style that has both stylish antiques and luxurious shiny accessories.  It is timeless with its shiny materials, brass and lacquered wood. Today we are going to tell you a little bit about the art déco style, suggesting which furniture to choose, which accessories to bet on and, above all, how not to "overdo it" and turn a hit into kitsch.

What is art déco? Find out the characteristic features of this style

The art déco style is ideal for those who are demanding and value perfection. It is the successor to the Art Nouveau style and its greatest heyday was between 1919 and 1939 and valued geometric shapes and spatial discipline. As a result, the hallmarks of the art déco style became, among other things, squares and rectangles and straight lines. In addition, art déco relies on attention to detail and interesting colours.

Besides, art déco style, or more precisely its features, was appreciated by artists. Looking for beauty in everyday objects, they loved simple household utensils and trinkets. Art déco also focused on functionality and the creation of everyday objects such as ceramics, furniture and fabrics.

Art déco is distinguished by:

  • simple geometric shapes,
  • syntheticism,
  • expensive materials - ivory, ebony or marble,
  • perfection,
  • the combination of two or sometimes several colour palettes - subdued and expressive,
  • contrasting colours,
  • drawing from other eras,
  • functionality,
  • combining different surfaces.

Antique, exotic and folk influences can be seen in art déco interiors. Each of these elements gives the style a unique character.

Materials used in the art déco style

The art déco style in the flat can be recognised by the materials used to create the accessories. Many of them are made in an interesting way, combining materials that at first glance do not match each other. The art déco style also likes original solutions with a touch of luxury and glamour. What do art déco furniture accessories look like? The most common are high upholstered headrests and armrests made of wood and gilded legs. These two elements can most often be seen in furniture, and other materials besides wood that distinguish art déco are:

  • onyx
  • rosewood,
  • natural leather,
  • mahogany,
  • veneer,
  • glass,
  • marble,
  • silver,
  • glossy fabrics.

When choosing a base for an art déco interior, it is good to bet on a colour from either a subdued palette or an intense one, such as white or black. Then it is time to look for the answer to the question: how to furnish an art déco interior? start with the furniture. It is necessary to choose them carefully, as in art déco both the colour, shape and material of a piece of furniture are important. Ideal furniture for interiors in this style include chests of drawers and cabinets with a veneer on which an interesting drawing appears, with a veneer/front made of walnut all those pieces of furniture which are polished and have a perfect appearance.

Art déco arrangements also include geometric patterns in various areas of the interior, such as on the wall and the sofa. When choosing a sofa, it is good to choose one that stands out with a colour from the art déco style palette - strong and intense, but not flashy. For an art déco interior, a Serena sofa in a classic style and in a colour such as intense purple or mustard yellow or spicy red will be great.

Art déco accessories and furniture

When choosing furniture for art déco interiors, it is best to go for mahogany, ebony or walnut, as well as cabinets and chests of drawers with interesting veneer fronts. Bearing in mind that the art déco style draws on the classics, you can place an armchair in the living room in the Brest glamour style or a massive Chesterfield, associated with English salons.

Sofas which are comfortable and match the art déco style should be in an intense colour such as bottle green or deep dark purple. Sofas that work well with base colours such as beige include sofas and corner sofas from the Laze or Monza collections. The former can become a retro style accent and the latter an English style accent. Both will look great in an art déco interior, but you should then remember to put the right accessories, such as gold or brass standing lamps. In addition, it is important to remember that any art déco arrangement, although it may be close to the eclectic style, should not imitate it. A skilful combination of several

The art déco style is all about original accessories in addition to the two colour palettes. Most of them should look like small works of art. When looking for suitable lamps and decorations, choose those with geometric patterns and simple shapes.

Living room and bedroom arrangements in art déco style

After a short story about art déco, it's time for some ideas for the bedroom and living room in this style. Let's start with the living room. An art déco living room should have walls decorated with wallpaper in a neutral colour with a delicate geometric pattern. The furniture should be comfortable and elegant such as the sofa and armchairs from the Avos, James or Serena collections. After the sofa, it is time for accessories, such as gold or brass figurines, a marble coffee table and paintings in soft colours. In addition, a mirror in a gold or wooden decorative frame can be hung on the wall to add depth to the interior.

The arrangement of an art déco bedroom can be given a noble touch through contrasts. An art déco bedroom interior can be created by relying on muted colours, such as white or ivory, and adding accents in intense colours, such as an upholstered bed headboard. When choosing a bed for an art déco style bedroom, it is best to go for a large bed with a very high upholstered or stitched headboard. A metal bed placed in the centre of the room will also look interesting. Accessories with gold elements, glass vases, dishes and decorative candlesticks will also add charm to the bedroom. In this style of bedroom, it is also advisable to provide 2 or 3 sources of light and choose chandeliers or wall lamps. In addition, any art déco arrangement can be created simply by experimenting to bring out the character of this amazing style.
